Nighttime Dread
Help… something hunts us in our own beds at night. Please… can anyone do something?
Recap
Gaalanaac, Switchblade, and Tarik experience a shift in their powers as they are called to the universe of Memoria to a small halfling village in Nightshade, Valeria to figure out why halflings are disappearing in the thick mists that started over the past week or so. Once there, they follow an acid-smelling trail down to a dammed river where ape-like prints are found as the smell of brimstone adds a new oddity to the scenario.
The dam begins to burst, or so Gaalanaac thinks, and he starts rushing everyone forward – but an Entangle spell triggers, restraining Tarik and slowing everyone down. Gaal yanks Tarik out and they all quickly rush forward as they see a thick mist approaching, where the acid smell seems worst. All joining together at the edge of the mist, they suddenly experience a horrible necrotic blast, nearly bringing Switchblade to her knees.
Tarik provides torchlight, which is just enough to negate their visibility disadvantage in the mist. Switchblade unleashes all hell against the not-quite-seeable monstrosity in the fog, accepting the acidic splashback that comes with every hit. Tarik, not to be outdone, follows suit, testing his skills as his Vexing hits grant him higher accuracy on his next attack. Gaalanaac bravely charges forward, though, it is hard to see and isn’t able to land a blow, manages to Graze the monstrosity with just enough power to bring it down. A glimpse into the future shows that, despite Switchblade’s precarious health, her dextrous reflexes would have prevented her from going down, at least for the first mighty attack by the monster.
The demon, realizing its pet is downed, is enraged and it springs forward with a mighty leap and begins attacking Gaalanaac, who had stepped out to taunt it. However, Switchblade and Tarik run to Gaal’s aid, swiftly wounding it to near-death as Gaalanaac then summons a radiant blaze of glory and completely destroys it.
Unfortunately, the pet monstrosity seems to have been absorbing the bodies it consumed to grow its mass… it would appear there are no survivors. The party informs the village that the threat is handled, and stay on a few days to investigate the situation. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of clues other than evidence of other planes on this one, such as small patches of sulfuric rock that would better belong to the Abyss.
